About Appellation

Located in the southwest foothills of the Simonsberg Mountain, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch is a small Wine of Origin ward within the larger district of Stellenbosch. Vines have been grown in the region since the 17th century, and although it's primarily a red wine area, there are small plantings of riesling and chenin blanc. Hailing from the Anjou region in France’s Loire Valley, chenin blanc was most likely introduced to South Africa by Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company in 1655 and is now the most widely planted grape variety, accounting for nearly one-fifth of all South Africa vineyard plantings.

Tasting Notes

Expressive nose of tropical and stone fruits, citrus, orange peel, hints of spices and honeysuckle, rich mouthfeel with creamy texture, fine structure and good depth, oodles of flavours of papaya, pineapple, white peach, quince, bruised apple, fresh lemon, touch of vanilla and honey, savoury mineral undertones and tangy acidity carrying through a long, persistent finish. Brimming with mouthwatering freshness, this is a delightful wine with impeccable balance, undeniable charm and vivacious energy. There is plenty of weight yet nothing is off-kilter, and I particularly love the zesty lift on the palate that adds a zingy feel to the aftertaste. (07/2023)
