1981 Rioja, Viña Bosconia Cosecha, López de Heredia Viña Tondonia

About Producer

Much has been written about López de Heredia Viña Tondonia which was founded in 1877 in Rioja. This cuvée Viña Bosconia Cosecha is from 40 year-old vines in a south-facing vineyard on clay and limestone soils called El Bosque, next to river Ebro at 465m altitude, on the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria range. The vineyard covers 15ha, of which 11ha of tempranillo, 2ha of red garnacha, 1ha of mazuelo and 1ha of graciano. This single-vineyard cuvée is only made in exceptional vintages in small quantities from 5,000 to 15,000 bottles. The wine is aged in barrels for 8 years minimum to 10 years maximum, and then cellared for another 10 years before being released to the market.

Varietals

Blend of 80% tempranillo, 15% garnacha and the rest from mazuelo and graciano.

About Appellation

Rioja wine region covers around 54,000ha of vineyards spread over three zones, Rioja Alta in the west on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria up to 800m, Rioja Alavesa to the east into the province of Álava in the Basque Country, and Rioja Oriental, further south, in the eastern section. While vines were first planted by the Phoenicians who travelled up to the Ebro River, vineyards were developed around Logroño in the early 2nd century under Roman rule. From the 15th century onwards, rioja wines became very popular with pilgrims travelling along the Way of Saint-James to Santiago de Compostela. Among red varietals, tempranillo reigns supreme, with garnacha (grenache) and to a lesser extent, mazuelo (local name for carignan) and graciano playing the supporting roles, and tradional white grape varieties are viura (aka macabeo), malvasiá and garnacha blanca .

Tasting Notes

Captivating nose of red fruits, old leather, tobacco leaf, cedar, graphite, wet earth and balsamic notes, dense mouthfeel with velvety texture, broad structure and amazing depth, oodles of flavours of cherry, red plum, orange zest, roasted nut, umami and brown spices intermingled with chalky mineral and sous-bois undertones, well-embedded acidity and resolved tannins carrying through a long, focused finish. Far removed from modern-style riojas, this is a remarkable wine at its peak of maturity with stylish elegance, majestic poise and alluring complexity. It’s fascinating to see how it meanders gracefully on the palate between understated toughness and ethereal weightlessness, and I particularly love the astonishing mix of intense flavours that adds a savoury overlay to the strikingly pure aftertaste.
