About Producer

The Jaboulet family bought the property in 1919 and under their ownership great La Chapelle vintages were produced, notably the legendary 1961. Sadly, there was a period of inconsistent vintages in the ‘90s and it was not until the acquisition by the Frey family, owners of château La Lagune in Bordeaux, in January 2006 that quality returned. The Freys brought in Denis Dubourdieu as consultant to help to revive La Chapelle’s former glory. Since then, under the management of Caroline Frey, who blended the 2005 La Chapelle, the estate has resumed its standing among the hermitage elite.

Varietals

Blend of grenache and syrah.

About Appellation

From organic vines planted on south-facing slopes on clay and stony soil. Created in the 1950s, this cuvée takes its name from the 45th parallel north that runs through the town of Pont-de-l’Isère, 2km south of the cellars of Paul Jaboulet Aîné.

Tasting Notes

Aromatic nose of ripe dark fruits, liquorice, lavender, floral scents, spices and forest floor, plush mouthfeel with silky texture, good structure and nice depth, oodles of flavours of red cherry, raspberry, plum, white pepper and dried herbs intertwined with a slightly mineral edge, lively acidity and round tannins carrying through a long, dense finish. This is a very charming wine with excellent balance and incredible freshness. It’s very enjoyable, juicy and crisp with a thrilling punch in fruit flavours, without ever straying into heavy. If you’re looking for a delicious quaffable house red at brilliant value, this is a good place to start. (07/2021)
