2012 Côtes du Rhône Villages, Terre d’Argile, Domaine de La Janasse
About Producer
In 1973, Aimé Sabon took over the vines of his father, who previously sent the grapes to the local cooperative, and created Domaine de La Janasse. From the 15ha of its beginning, the estate has expanded to more than 90ha currently. Today, brother and sister Christophe and Isabelle are at the helm of the family estate and continue to produce a sensational range of wines that position La Janasse among the top flight of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Varietals
Blend of grenache, syrah, mourvèdre and carignan in equal proportions. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels (1/3 new) for syrah, mourvèdre and carignan and in wooden vats (foudres) for grenache.
About Appellation
From a 15ha vineyard on rolled pebbles and clay soil, located north of the town of Courthézon, a stone’s throw from the châteauneuf-du-pape appellation.
Tasting Notes
Fragrant nose of black fruits, tapenade, liquorice, graphite and peppery spices, dense mouthfeel with seamless texture, excellent concentration and good depth, multilayered flavours of ripe black currant, black cherry, fig, baking spices, dried herbs, polished tannins and savoury mineral undertones leading onto a fresh, persistent finish. This is a cracking wine with understated poise, endearing charm and no shortage of refinement. It’s pure, precise and deliciously opulent, yet there is a thread of lively acidity on the palate that makes it thrillingly voluptuous. Don’t be misled by the humble Côtes du Rhône-Villages appellation, it’s clearly punching above its weight and could easily stand up to a whole host of châteauneuf-du-pape. (11/2021)
