About Producer
Founded in 1844 by the Hadjipavlou family, Etko Winery is the oldest winery in Cyprus, and it has a long tradition of producing high quality Commandaria. Beyond the production of Commandaria, the winery also carries out research and production at Zanatzia, in the Limassol District, where its original vineyards are now planted with new grape varieties.

Blend of xynisteri (white) and mavro (red)
About Appellation
Commandaria is a fortified wine made from sun-dried indigenous xynisteri (white) and mavro (red) grapes in a delimited region of 14 villages in the Troödos foothills, 30km north of the city of Limassol, on the island of Cyprus. It’s regarded as an eastern Mediterranean cousin of Port and Jerez, though lighter and more refreshing with higher acidity. The wine traces its roots back to the ancient Greeks when it was served as a popular drink at festivals. During the crusades, Commandaria was served at the wedding of King Richard the Lionheart and Berengaria of Navarre in 1191, in Limassol. When the Knights Hospitaller of St. John arrived in Cyprus in late 13th century after leaving Jerusalem, they planted vines to produce fortified wine in large quantities for export to Europe’s royal courts.
Tasting Notes
Dark amber chestnut colour, alluring nose of dried fig, orange peel, roasted almond, honey and caramel, dense mouthfeel with satiny texture, excellent focus and good depth, multilayered flavours of raisin, candied dates, crème brûlée and citrus fruits liberally laced with hints of cinnamon and confit ginger, lovely freshness leading onto a long, harmonious finish. This is a seductive wine with beguiling personality and subtle complexity. It’s opulent yet well balanced and moderately sweet without ever straying into cloying or heavy. I particularly love the racy bead of acidity throughout the palate that adds up an enchanting lift to the aftertaste. (04/2022)
