2008 Champagne, Taittinger, Comtes de Champagne, Grands Crus Blanc de Blancs

About Producer

Launched in 1952 with only 35 vintages produced so far, this Blanc de Blancs cuvée from Taittinger pays tribute to the Counts of Champagne who ruled the region from 956 to 1284, in particular Thibaud IV whose seal adorns every bottle. Count of Champagne from 1222 to 1253, crowned King of Navarre in 1234, Thibaud led the Baron’s Crusade in 1239. On his way back to Champagne, he brought home some vines from Cyprus and it is said that he planted these ancestors of chardonnay on his land in Epernay and Sézanne.

Varietals

100% chardonnay from 5 Grand Cru villages. Disgorged in July 2019. Dosage: 9g/L.

About Appellation

One of the first mentions of vines in the region was made by Saint Remigius, the Bishop of Reims who baptised the King of the Franks Clovis I in 496, who listed in his testament a vineyard in the suburb of Reims. Much has been written about the key roles of Dom Pierre Pérignon (1638-1715), a Benedictine monk at Hautvilliers Abbey, and Frère Jean Oudart (1654-1742), from Saint-Pierre-aux-Monts Abbey in Pierry, in the development of Champagne as we know today. In 1690, 'Champagne Wines' were first mentioned to designate sparkling wines of the region, and it was also the first time in France that a wine was identified as produce from a specific region. Today, the vineyards covers 34,300ha in four sub-regions, Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs and Côte des Bar. Within the three first sub-regions, there are 17 Grand Cru communes. While the main grape varieties are pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier, four other varietals are also used in some blends, arbane, petit meslier, pinot blanc and pinot gris (known locally as fromenteau).

Tasting Notes

Captivating nose of yellow fruits, citrus, nougatine, crushed stones and white flowers, crisp mouthfeel with lacy texture, remarkable focus and exceptional purity, multilayered flavours of green apple, pear, peach, lemon sorbet, brioche, sweet spices, hints of caramel and honey liberally laced with chalky mineral undertones, zesty acidity and refined bubbles carrying through a long, saline finish. Bearing witness to the majestic beauty of the 2008 vintage, this is a sensational champagne with ethereal grace, superb concentration and enthralling complexity. It’s dense yet bright and linear, with power and finesse cruising in lockstep along the palate and infusing an irresistible sense of harmony into the lingering aftertaste. (03/2023)
