About Producer
Founded in 1844 by Christopher and Mary Penfold from plantings of vine cuttings they had carried away on their voyage over to Australia, the Penfolds we now today owes much to the vision and innovation of Max Schubert, the house first chief winemaker from 1948 to 1975. A larger than life character, Max Schubert did propel Penfolds to global stage thanks to the creation of a range of iconic wines. Today, the winemaking team headed by Peter Gago are working wonders to maintain Penfolds' standing among the world top elite wineries.

About Appellation
First released in 2008, Bin 150 is a relatively new Penfolds ‘Bin’ label made from selected shiraz from Marananga, a sub-region in the Barossa Valley. Founded in the mid-19th century as Gnadenfrei (‘Free by the grace of God’) by German settlers from the Prussian province of Silesia who planted vines in the region, the village took in 1918 the name of Marananga, which means ‘With my two hands’ in the Aboriginal language of the Overland Corner tribe. Very close to the centre of the Barossa Valley floor, slightly to the northwest, the surrounding vineyards lie on a mix of ancient red soils, volcanic quartz and alluvial washes with gneiss and schist that, combined with warm dry conditions, provide the backbone to some of the region’s most famous wines.
Tasting Notes
Enticing nose of dark fruits, blood orange, roasted meat, bakingspices, oakwood, graphite and floral scents, dense mouthfeel with cashmere-like texture, broad structure and excellent concentration, multilayered flavours of blueberry, blackberry, prune, black plum, mocha, Christmas pudding and liquorice liberally laced with flinty mineral undertones, well-embedded acidity and resolved tannins carrying through a long, savoury finish. This is a superb wine with composed poise, captivating complexity and vibrant freshness. Unmistakably Barossa shiraz, it’s seductively rich and substantial yet remarkably proportioned, cloaking its innate power in lovely fruit definition and beguiling roundness. At 13 years old, it’s pleasantly lush, intense and firm without ever straying into heavy or overbearing, while holding everything in perfect balance. (09/2023)
