2018 Alsace, Lieu-dit Schimberg, Pinot Gris, Domaine Dirler-Cadé
About Producer
Domaine Dirler-Cadé is located in the village of Bergholtz, at 3km southeast of Guebwiller, a small town at midway between Colmar and Mulhouse. Dating back to 1871 when the first Jean Dirler founded Vins Dirler, the estate took its current name in 2000, following the marriage of fifth generation Jean Dirler with Ludivine Cadé, and the inclusion of Ludivine’s family vineyards. Practicing biodynamic viticulture since 1998, the domaine today covers 18ha, of which 42% are grands crus. Though not often in the headlines, this is one of the finest domaines in Alsace with a superb range of wines that are true renditions of their magnificent terroirs and known for their excellence, precision and density.

Tasting Notes
Aromatic nose of orchard fruits, crushed rocks and wild herbs, round and pure mouthfeel with ample volume, remarkable concentration and amazing clarity, juicy flavours of sapid white stone fruits, citrus, hints of toasted bread and gunflint, lively acidity and smoky notes leading onto a savoury, pleasant finish. This is a very well-crafted wine with exquisite charm and excellent precision, keeping a perfect balance between fruit density, saline minerality and stimulating freshness. Don’t be misled by the underrated grape, and though not having the complexity of a grand cru this wine has an enthralling personality and a gripping sense of place rarely seen in most generic pinot gris. I particularly love the thrilling lift on the palate that gives you an utterly delightful feel at first sip. (10/2021)
