Château Malescot St-Exupéry: Margaux's Bold and Unique Expression

About Château Malescot St-Exupéry

Château Malescot St-Exupéry traces its roots to the 17th century, when it was owned by Simon Malescot, a royal councillor to the Parliament of Bordeaux. In 1827, Count Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Exupéry—great-grandfather of Antoine, the famed author of The Little Prince—acquired the property, giving it its distinctive name. After a period of decline, Paul and Roger Zuger purchased the estate in 1955, spearheading its revival.

Located in Margaux, the 28-hectare vineyard benefits from gravelly, chalk, and clay soils, with some parcels neighbouring the prestigious Château Margaux. The blend typically consists of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, producing wines that balance power with elegance.

Focus on the Margaux Appellation

Margaux, located 25 kilometres north of Bordeaux, is synonymous with elegance and finesse in wine. Its vineyards cover 1,530 hectares, sitting on gravelly soils atop limestone and clay sublayers. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The appellation is home to 21 grands crus classés in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, with Château Margaux as its most illustrious estate.

2009 Margaux, Château Malescot St-Exupéry: A Vintage of Vibrant Intensity

The 2009 Château Malescot St-Exupéry captivates with a nose of dark berry fruits, baking spices, tobacco leaf, and forest floor. On the palate, its dense yet fleshy texture reveals flavours of blackcurrant, raspberry, roasted coffee, and undergrowth, interwoven with spicy and mineral undertones. Fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity lead to a long, precise finish.

This wine embodies a unique combination of Margaux typicity and bold intensity, reminiscent of the Médoc's northern communes. While it deviates from traditional Margaux elegance, its lavish fruit and structured framework make it a compelling expression of the estate’s terroir.

Blend of 51% cabernet sauvignon, 35% merlot, 8% cabernet and 6% petit verdot.

2012 Margaux, Château Malescot St-Exupéry: A Wine of Composed Elegance

The 2012 Château Malescot St-Exupéry opens with an aromatic nose of black fruits, smoke, floral scents, and forest floor. The dense mouthfeel, with its velvety texture, showcases excellent precision and impressive fruit purity. Multi-layered flavours of black cherry, cassis, raspberry, plum, tobacco, and black tea are generously laced with subtle earthy undertones. Racy acidity and fluffy tannins lead to a long, fruity finish.

This seductive wine possesses composed poise, impeccable balance, and understated complexity. It confidently exudes intensity and power, yet an exquisite bead of juicy freshness throughout the palate makes it irresistibly attractive at this early stage of its drinking window. A remarkable effort from this uneven vintage.

Blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. Only 30% of the crop went to the grand vin.
